What Makes Energy Efficient Windows?

It is a known fact that energy efficient windows can lessen the energy usage of your home, which in turn can help reduce your monthly power bills. It’s no wonder then why these windows are so popular among homeowners embarking on replacement window projects for their homes. But what may not be clear is how these windows are able to provide this benefit. What exactly makes them energy efficient? The answer is found with how the frame and glass is constructed.

Frame Construction

The frame of an energy efficient window will likely have a series of internal chambers built into it. These chambers act as buffer zones for heat loss. So, as an example, instead of heat from the summer sun passing through the frame and into your home, that heat gets trapped inside one of these chambers. Similarly, cooled air from inside your home will only be able to transfer into one of these chambers instead of all the way through the frame and outside your home. Some window manufacturers can even fill these chambers with argon, an inert gas with low thermal conductivity, for added insulation.

Glass Construction

The glass in energy efficient windows will have a Low-E coating, which will reflect heat away from your home in the summer and back into your home during the winter. Additionally, these windows may contain multiple panes of glass, each separated by a spacer. This spacer functions in much the same way as the internal frame chambers – it prevents heat transference across the panes. And, like the internal frame chambers, this spacer can also be filled with argon gas to maximize insulating performance.
