Home maintenance is important all year, especially in the fall. In most regions of the country, you should be preparing for winter weather. The following items are common items that should be checked during the fall:

Windows and Doors

Your HVAC system may work perfectly, but it will use more energy than necessary if your windows leak. Warm air can leak through the smallest crack in a window frame. In addition, heavier cold air can come in through door and window frames that do not have adequate weather stripping.

  1. Check the frames and sashes around your windows. They should not have splinters or cracks. Louvre windows and double sash windows should close completely.
  2. Check doors. Doors should close tightly and weather stripping may be necessary if you are in a cold winter area. Many doors have decorative windows that should also be checked.
  3. Check heating systems, ventilation and air conditioning. As you close down your AC unit for the season, make sure to give it a once over to ensure you are storing it in proper condition. Check to make sure your heating systems and ventilation are working properly to ensure energy efficiency as the weather turns cooler.

Roofs and Rain Gutters

  • – Using a professional service, have your roof cleaned and the rain gutters washed. The drain should be included in this cleaning! During the summer and fall months, debris and leaves, may have collected on the roof and in gutters. Using a professional service will keep you safe and save time.
  • – Have a roofing professional check the roof. Check for loose shingles or problems where the roof connects to the walls potentially causing leaks or damage to the house.
  • – Check fascia boards. Make sure to check the roof fascia, as this is a common place where rot can occur if your roof or gutters are not working properly.
  • – Check the insulation in the attic and basement. Insulation ensures that your home keeps in the warm air and keeps out the cool air. Proper attic insulation also helps to prevent ice damming on your roof during the snowy months.
