Bitumen is ancient. Naturally occurring in areas like tar sands and tar pits, bitumen has been used by humans for centuries for just about everything, from gluing handles to flint tools, to caulking reed boats on the Nile. Two modifiers are generally used in modified bitumen, Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) and Atactic Polypropolyene (APP).

APP Modified Bitumen

Derbigum is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of APP modified bitumen. By adding this plastic modifier to the bitumen (asphalt), Derbigum produces a tough, strong-weathering coating that can be heat welded, though some can be put down with a cold adhesive. APP is more plastomeric than SBS. This means the material softens when heated, but hardens as it cools. APP does not stretch and contract the way SBS does, making it more predictable and less likely to ripple or pucker.

From Derbigum’s U.S. plant in Kansas, the manufacturer produces more than 27 million square feet of APP and other coatings each year.     – Granulated-surface, single-, dual- or triple-reinforced
    – Granulated surface, white reflective for energy efficiency
    – Derbibrite—an environmentally friendlier, white surface, smooth membrane
    – Derbpure—bitumen-free, made entirely from vegetable oil and tree resin
