Texans notoriously spend millions on their energy bills every year – for air conditioning. However, there is one energy-saving trick that is hardly considered because many people simply are not aware that it exists: roof ventilation.

A new shingle roof with proper attic ventilation will improve your energy consumption by providing good air circulation and acting as a sort of buffer between the sun’s heat pounding on your roof and the interior of your home.

Passive Ventilation vs. Mechanical Vents

Passive Ventilation – The most common type for an asphalt new shingle roof. Some vents are installed under the eaves, while others are installed higher up on the roof line to allow warmer air to escape. The simple ventilation system lets nature do the work. It works with the natural upward movement of heated air (known as air convection), and provides a system for it to escape from your attic. This system works especially well on warm, windy days.

Mechanical Vents – This powered system can be used on a roof top to pull up the warmer air from inside the building and release it outside of the roofing structure. It is occasionally seen in commercial and residential buildings with little or no attic space. Note: the intake air must be sufficient enough to keep the powered system operating.

Vaulted Ceilings

This popular design has little or no attic space to utilize for ventilation. A quality shingle roofing system will be installed with adequate space between the insulation and roof deck for proper ventilation. Vents are placed at the eaves and on the top to allow air circulation.

Good Ventilation

A good ventilation system will also remove moisture from attics and crawl spaces beneath the roof. Moisture build-up under the roof in areas like Austin, with a summer average of 72% humidity, can lead to mold and mildew growing in attic spaces. These emit harmful pathogens, causing allergic reactions.
