Asphalt shingles are a common and convenient material to use when roofing your San Antonio home. Since a roof is a big investment, you want to make sure you chose an option that lasts…and make sure that it is accompanied by a good warranty.
There are two primary types of shingle roof warranties: those that guarantee the material, and those that guarantee the work.
Manufacturer’s Warranty
Shingle manufacturers will provide a warranty on the product itself. This means that, if properly installed, they will guarantee their product against defect or failure. Warranties can be purchased in limited or extensive levels of protection. Owen’s Corning offers warranty packages start at 5-10 years of coverage and range to 10-50 years of coverage. The manufacturer shingle roof warranties will cover both material and the labor needed to replace and defective shingles. The highest levels of protection are only offered when using a preferred and certified Owen’s Corning installer. However, all warranties must be registered before you can count on them to cover your roof.
Note: If you install shingles on your own (DIY!) you risk voiding your manufacturer’s warranty.
Workmanship Warranty
While it is possible to get a manufacturer’s warranty without using a preferred installer, it does not provide the additional level of guarantee that the installation will be done correctly. Trusted contractors will provide their own workmanship warranties, which cover the quality of the installation itself.
