Every day brings new opportunities. For some roofing companies, a new opportunity may mean the first time they tackle commercial roofing. A residential roofing crew may happily experiment on your flat roof by installing a roofing material they have never used before. You probably would rather have a commercial roofer with the unique qualifications needed for low-slope and flat roof work.
Low-Slope or Flat?
Some roofers new to commercial roofing will not even know that the term “flat roof” is industry shorthand for low-slope roofing. Every roof has to slope to drain water. So-called “flat roofs” really pitch downhill so Texas rains head to scuppers and interior drains. Generally, a low-slope roof is any that has a pitch of 3:12 (dropping three inches over every 12 horizontal inches) or less. A 0:12 would be a truly flat roof, and an invitation to ponding and water infiltration.
BELDON® Roofing Company has experience with every type of low-slope roof, from roofs spanning enormous warehouses and distribution centers to small commercial properties dotting our Main Streets.
A residential roofer switching to commercial roofer may be tempted to use asphalt shingles on a low-slope roof, but manufacturers’ warranties do not allow shingles on anything below 4:12.
Materials
In the right crew’s hands, single-ply roofing material can go down remarkably fast and last more than two decades. BELDON® Roofing Company installs single-ply roofing from leading manufacturers day in, day out. Our crews know how to weld seams that will not separate. We know how to deal with obstructions, parapets, drains and flashing.
An inexperienced commercial roofer in San Antonio may install the single-ply membrane incorrectly, voiding the warranty. Its crews could actually damage your commercial roof.
Scale
Commercial roof work is nearly always on a larger scale than residential roofing. More surface area means a roofer needs bigger crews, more equipment and greater capital. Low-slope roofing is as dangerous as steep-slope work, but with hot asphalt, greater heights and more workers, risk rises rapidly. BELDON® Roofing Company has trained crews using proper safety equipment able to operate at any building height, on any low-slope roof. Most residential roofers cannot say the same.
