When the hot sun’s rays beat down on your windows, it can cause the glass to thin with time. If your windows are old, the glass is more likely to become weak, allowing unwanted air into your home. Upgrading to a newer window style can keep the air you want in, and keep the air you don’t want out.

2. Update Appliances

If you’re still working with old appliances around the house, this could be another reason for the decrease of energy efficiency in your home. Old appliances account for almost ⅕ of your home’s energy cost. Even if they are working fine, old appliances consume a ton of energy. Check the efficiency of your hot water heater, refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher by calling an energy expert.

3. Install New Insulation

Similar to your windows, the insulation that lies in your walls and floors does not get better with age, and can undoubtedly let in unwanted air. By replacing old insulation, the noise from outside can be reduced, humidity control will be increased, less unwanted critters and bugs will enter your home, and your heating and cooling systems won’t have to work as hard.
