Water is an engineer’s dream. It is elegantly simple, but has several fascinating properties, such as adhesion, cohesion and surface tension. These characteristics allow the unique gutter design of LeafGuard to solve your gutter needs.

Cohesion

Water holds together (cohesion), forming a smooth sheet when rolling off your roof and onto the smooth, painted metal of the LeafGuard gutter system. Water molecules are naturally attracted to each other, allowing liquid water to bend and follow the path of the unique gutter design, while leaves and debris do not adhere and therefore do not clog the system.

Adhesion

For all the natural attraction one water molecule has for another, water is even more strongly attracted to special surfaces, like the ScratchGuard® paint finish on the one-piece aluminum LeafGuard gutter system. This painted surface, which is warranted not to chip, peel or crack, attracts the water molecules so strongly, they travel around the gutter’s curved front edge, defying gravity.

Gravity is strong, but the adhesive force between water and the smoothly painted surface of the LeafGuard gutter system is stronger than gravity’s pull. Adhesion carries the sheet of rainwater back toward the gutter’s trough. Gravity wins in the end, bringing the water down into the gutter and off to the downspout.

Debris

The molecular structure of leaves, twigs, and pine needles is fundamentally different than the simple structure of water. This tree debris does not adhere to the painted aluminum surface of the LeafGuard gutter system. The reason is obvious: solids do not flex around the smooth curve of the gutter’s front. So all that natural debris washes off your roof. It never has a chance to take the gutter’s curve into your home’s gutters and eventually clogging them.

Science & Technology

The technology in a LeafGuard gutter system is deceptive in its simplicity. Through careful thought and a lot of engineering, the designers of the gutter system have harnessed some fundamental physics principles—cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension of polar liquids—to create a gutter that never clogs.

The LeafGuard gutter system is guaranteed not to clog. Its smooth, one-piece construction (custom fabricated on site) offers plenty of volume to carry away water in the hardest downpours, while the debris-shedding hood whisks leaves, pine needles, and twigs away.

Patented Design

Because the hood is of the same material and formed in the same operation as the rest of the gutter, no part of the LeafGuard gutter system will create snags, nooks, and crannies to catch debris and carry it into the gutter’s trough. This innovative design is patented (Patent #US5491998 A).

You can harness LeafGuard’s ingenious technology to have worry-free gutters, or you can stick with US Patent #US70016 A, an extension ladder. And remember, if you do use the ladder to clean out those old-fashioned, constantly clogging gutters, please stay off your roof!
