Shingle Roofing Terminology:

  • Drip Edge: Around the bottom edge of the roof is the drip edge, which allows water to drip over and off the roof and into the gutters or away from the building.
  • Fascia: The finishing edge at the end of the rafters. It runs perpendicular to the ground.
  • Flashing:: Small pieces of material, usually metal, that function as water barriers at seams and joints.
  • Hip shingles:These shingles cover a valley seam in the roof, at the bottom of two intersecting slopes. Their integrity is extremely important, as valleys are extremely vulnerable to water damage.
  • Pipe Collars: These pieces seal the cracks and seams where pipes penetrate the roof, either for ventilation or as part of the plumbing.
  • Ridge shingles: Shingles designed to provide a “cap” where the slopes of the roof meet at the top.
  • Sheathing: The wooden plywood deck that is attached to the rafters. Your entire roofing system will rely on this for stability.
  • Shingles: Asphalt roof shingles are the most popular choice for roofing material, both in Austin and throughout the rest of the country. They are overlapped for optimal weather protection, and come in simple three-tab shingles, or more visually appealing architectural shingles. Architectural shingles are designed to give a more textured feel.
  • Soffit: Covers the overhang of the roof, running parallel to the ground.
  • Underlayment: A proper sloped roof starts with the underlayment, which is a broad layer of asphalt placed directly on the sheathing (it is also referred to as tar paper).
