Your windows are one of the deciding factors for whether or not your home is energy efficient, therefore, keeping them up to date is essential. However, sometimes your windows cannot be saved when they are old. Here’s what you need to know about the right time to replace your windows.

Weather Stripping and Caulking No Longer Do The Job

Repairing your windows with quick, at-home fixes can sometimes be efficient. By weather stripping and caulking the edges of your windows, you can reduce drafts, but only to an extent. After some time, when small repairs aren’t working anymore, your windows will need to be replaced.

Drafts are Present

Replacing your windows with a newer window style can increase the energy efficiency of your home. If drafts are coming from your windows, it could be putting strain on your heating and cooling systems, causing them to overrun themselves to make up for the air leaking into your home. Deciding on a window replacement could save you lots of money in the long run on your energy bill costs.

It is Difficult to Open and Shut My Windows

If you have double hung or single hung windows that are very old, it may be difficult to open and close them all the way if the mechanism inside the window does not work anymore. The balance is what allows these windows to stay open, and over time they can quit working and slam shut quickly, causing a safety hazard.

Condensation Forms Inside of The Glass

Usually, if you have double or triple paned windows, condensation and fog can form on the inside of the windows. Some of the time, condensation will not form on the glass, but a white film of calcium can be seen. Both of these are signs that the seals have failed, and the insulation is no longer working.

Thinning Glass

The sun can cause the glass on your windows to thin. When the hot sun wears against your windows all day, everyday, the glass can easily deteriorate and not insulate as well as a new set of windows would. A window replacement can quickly fix this issue.
